Graeme was 94 years old on 7 September, 2008, and has been a major influence in the past 70 years of his involvement in Oz' jazz world. For more about him refer to my article in the Autumn 2005 IAJRC Journal, entitled 'Ninety-Plus: The Unstoppable Graeme Bell'. This double CD contains 46 tracks, featuring 43 of his compositions (three appear twice, in totally different interpretations). The presentation is impressive.
Graeme Bell & His Australian Jazz Band Graeme Emerson Bell AO MBE (7 September 1914 – 13 June 2012) was an Australian Dixieland and classical jazz pianist, composer and band leader. According to The Age, his "band's music was hailed for its distinctive Australian edge, which he describes as 'nice larrikinism' and 'a happy Aussie outdoor feel'". Aside from playing, Bell was one of the leading promoters of jazz in Australia, bringing American performers such as Rex Stewart to Australia. Graeme Emerson Bell, AO, MBE (7 September 1914 – 13 June 2012) was an Australian Dixieland and classical jazz pianist, composer and band leader. Bell was one of the leading promoters of jazz in Australia, bringing American performers such as Rex Stewart to Australia
Bell made his name in post-war Europe with a tour to Czechoslovakia in 1947 with his Australian Jazz Band. They enjoyed further success in Britain and the Continent in the 1950s when Bell produced numerous great recorded collaborations with London trumpeter Humphrey Lyttleton, American blues musician Big Bill Broonzy and his own sidemen. Having founded the Swaggie record label in 1949, Bell played and travelled internationally until 1957, when he settled in Sydney.
Some of these rare sides were left over from studio sessions that resulted in records issued by the Tempo and Esquire labels; the rest of the material was recorded live at the Streatham and Leicester Square jazz clubs. Some of the takes are "incomplete," meaning that the band is either rehearsing, horsing around, engaging in conversation, cutting up, leg pulling, or telling naughty jokes. The overall effect is remarkably entertaining. feat: Graeme Bell & His Austrailian Jazz Band.
