Traditional Vietnamese music is highly diverse and syncretistic, combining native and foreign influences, and influences from Vietnam's ethnic minority groups. Throughout its history, Vietnam has been most heavily influenced by the Chinese musical tradition, as an integral part, along with Korea, Mongolia and Japan. The former Indochinese kingdom of Champa also exerted some influence (albeit more minor when compared to China) on Vietnam's traditional music.

This album of traditional, popular, and ritual Vietnamese from northern, central, and southern regions give the listener some appreciation of the variety of musical instruments and styles. The vocalists of the ensemble, Aí Xuân, Diêu Dûc, Bích Phuong, and Bích Liê demonstrate the unique Vietnamese glissando and warble form, akin to that of the dan bau single-string instrument.
Both this album and String Instruments of Vietnam (KICC 5121) consist of this sort of music. While some new compositions are interesting, the performances of "traditional" music lack the spices (nuances) that give Vietnamese music its individuality. Related to this, and including many of the same pieces played by the same musicians, are The Music of Vietnam, Volume . and . (Celestial Harmonies 13082-2 and 13083-2), as well as Vietnam: Reviving a Tradition (Playa Sound PS 65116). None of these albums has expert annotations either.
The music of Vietnam is feeling the impact of a wide variety of Western influences - but some scholars, performers and enthusiasts are keeping alive the traditional modes developed in courts, theaters and villages and passed on through the centuries. One such thusiast is Phong Nguyen, a faculty member at Kent State University who sang, played brilliantly on a dazzling variety of string, wind and percussion instruments and led a small ensemble Saturday night at the Freer Gallery of Art. Nguyen sampled a broad spectrum of Vietnamese traditional music.
