Die Fledermaus (The Bat) is an operetta composed by Johann Strauss II to a German libretto by Karl Haffner and Richard Genée. The operetta premièred on 5 April 1874 at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna and has been part of the regular repertoire ever since. Johann Strauss II (October 25, 1825 – June 3, 1899), also known as Johann Strauss, J. the Younger, the Son (German: Sohn), Johann Baptist Strauss, was an Austrian composer of light music, particularly dance music and operettas

Album Information : Title: Strauss: Die Fledermaus. The first recording dates back a full century to 1907. The roots of Johann Strauss II's "Die Fledermaus" stretch back to an 1851 farce in German by Robert Benedix, "Die Gefängnis" ("The Prison"). In 1872, that admirable pair of hacks, Meilhac and Halévy, cobblers of libretti for both Offenbach and Bizet, converted the old German play into a French vaudeville as "Le réveillon" ("The Revel" or perhaps "The Christmas Eve Party")
