Tom Waits collaborated with director Robert Wilson and librettist William Burroughs on the musical stage work The Black Rider in 1990. Waits had proven an excellent collaborator when he worked with director Francis Ford Coppola on One from the Heart, making that score an integral part of the film.

Lyrics to "The Black Rider" song by Tom Waits: Come on a long with the Black Rider We'll have a gay old time Lay down in the web of the black spide. Come on a long with the Black Rider We'll have a gay old time Lay down in the web of the black spider I'll drink your blood like wine. So come on in It ain't no sin Take off your skin And dance around your bones. So come along with the Black Rider We'll have a gay old time. Anchors away with the Black Rider I'll drink your blood like wine I'll drop you off in Harlem with the Black Rider Out where the bullets shine. And when you're done You cock your gun The blood will run Like ribbons in your hair. So come along wit hthe Black Rider We'll have a gay old.

Notes

This album contains songs Tom Waits wrote and performed for the stage production of The Black Rider directed by Robert Wilson and written by William Burroughs.

The Black Rider tells an updated version of a 19th century story of a clerk who makes a Faustian contract with the Devil, accepting magic bullets to win the hand of his beloved in a shooting contest. Wilson's vivid images paid homage to German expressionism, Waits performed a shotgun marriage between Tin Pan Alley and burlesque horror music, while Burroughs' politically acute librettos gave unique insight into the mind of a character whose actions lead to tragic consequences.

Performance of the play was done by The Talia Theatre Of Hamburg.
Album recorded at Prairie Sun Recording Studios, Cotati, California and Music Factory, Hamburg, Germany.

Printed side of disc states 'Made in France by PMDC'. Matrix states 'Made in Germany by EDC'.
