Wilhelm Furtwängler saw a wild, fantastic and even demonic universe in the symphonies of Brahms. Music is not something that is invented and constructed, he wrote, but something that grows, emergin. irectly from the hands of nature. With organic development so crucial to Brahms’ music, his symphonies were destined for a prominent place in Furtwängler’s repertoire. Among the other works in this collection are the Violin Concerto with Yehudi Menuhin, and the Piano Concerto No. 2 with Edwin Fischer, both recognised as landmark interpretations.
Wilhelm Furtwängler & Berliner Philharmoniker II. Allegro apassionato. Johannes Brahms - Edwin Fischer, Wilhelm Furtwängler, BPO (1942) - Piano Concerto №2 I. llegretto grazioso.
Furtwängler came relatively late to Brahms (like so many of the composer's most abiding admirers) but identified deeply with Brahms's dark strain of melancholy and self-consciousness. The Furtwängler trademarks are all here-palpable molding of tempos and dynamics to concentrate drama, oracular moments of insight, and an astonishingly compelling, organic sense of the whole.
