Shilela Hailu Mergia is a one-man band. In 1985, master accordionist and veteran bandleader, arranger and keyboardist released the Hailu Mergia & His Classical Instrument cassette. In a nostalgic effort to bring back the vintage accordion sound of his youth, Hailu gave Ethiopian music a sonic makeover. He was already celebrated for his work with the groundbreaking Addis Ababa ethio-jazz and funk outfit Walias Band

The acclaimed and highly sought-after LP by Hailu Mergia and the Walias, Tche Belew, an album of instrumentals released in 1977, is perhaps the most seminal recording released in the aftermath of the 1974 revolution. The story of the Walias band is a critical chapter in Ethiopian popular music, taking place during a period of music industry flux and political complexity in the country.

Anayajurus
One of the best reissues of recent years, in its field. In my opinion better than the highly-rated Mammane Sani Et Son Orgue album which ploughs a similar furrow.Repetitive organ melodies float eternally over minimal beatbox rhythms, sometimes with the addition of mechanical handclaps.Pumping basslines and synthetic, pulsing keyboard work seem to manufacture a timeless, still zone of peace.Like an African Terry Riley.... simple yet complex at the same time in it's undulating interweaving melodies. One for a hot summer's day, just press the 'repeat' button on your CD player.
