Dev Hynes just released his new album, Freetown Sound, two days ahead of schedule. The new Blood Orange album features a host of surprise guest collaborators, including Debbie Harry, Carly Rae Jepsen, and spoken word from Ta-Nehisi Coates, whose Black Panther series is already the most important superhero text of the year. The album, as a whole, sounds firmly rooted in the previously defined Blood Orange aesthetic: dreamy, synth-laden, cleaner around the edges than The Weeknd, and as lovely and lyrical as the best of Solange Knowles, for whom Hynes wrote Losing You. Of course, the album is as political as Kendrick’s Butterfly, too.
Lyrics to "Safe And Sound" song by Rebelution: When we come down, oh yeah yeah yeah We'll be dreaming safe and sound You better know why Baby, that. This is the kind of sound that I want to hear This is the kind of vibe that I want to feel And you're the type of girl baby on the real Check it one time, what's the deal? Maybe I'm, I'm caught up in the thing that you know I like See we can make time baby overnight Or we could make a grand escape And we can roll high by the way. And when we come down, oh yeah yeah yeah We'll be dreaming safe and sound You better know why Baby, that's all I got. When we come down, oh yeah yeah yeah We'll be dreaming safe and sound You better know why Oh baby, that's all.
Blood Orange – Freetown Sound. A bold, uncompromising statement against oppression and a striking representation of society's struggles. Freetown Sound expands this quality exponentially, with Hynes pushing his sonic palette to new heights. He enlists Zuri Marley to reinterpret an Eddy Grant song from 1984, adding crossover reggae into his toolbox a mere track after a grooving new wave odyssey featuring Debbie Harry herself. For a biographical album, Hynes adeptly weaves multiple voices throughout, between the collaborators he works with and the lips he samples. Inspired by the Dust Brothers and Paul’s Boutique, it’s a collage of sonic ideas that bleed together to make a dense work that invites study and appreciation.
