The Dillinger Escape Plan don't make any major stylistic leaps on this, their fourth album. In some ways, it's a return to the shouty, spastic post-hardcore of their full-length debut, Calculating Infinity, abandoning the electronic freakouts of 2007's Ire Works while retaining some of the melodic elements, even if there's nothing here as almost radio-friendly as "Milk Lizard. So is the element of surprise; "Widower" is a piano-driven ballad that's downright beautiful, even (or especially) when the drummer's going berserk behind his bandmates, slowly building to an inevitable hardcore outburst at the four-minute mark. If there's one thing to complain about on Option Paralysis, it's that the album has pieces made up of cool parts, instead of songs made up of hooks.

Option Paralysis may be considered a side-step by some, but there are so many exuberant flourishes and cleverly thought out harmonies that it’s probably better to consider it a mind-boggling step over. Scatterbrained as the Dillinger Escape Plan’s music may sound, it is precisely orchestrated and delicately planned as a New York City subway grid. Beginning with their often forgotten, benchmark EP Under The Running Board, DEP have brought a tenacity and style that remains profoundly unique. In spite of line-up changes - like that of Chris Pennie, who fled to drum with Coheed and Cambria - their vision remains boundless. That distinctive style, which is often cited as being created by the Dillinger Escape Plan, consists of a blend of metal and hardcore trickled with unorthodox time signatures.

A solid epic of an album. Merging their progressive side with their insane hardcore. If you have a time machine, travel back in time and catch them live.
Dillinger Escape Plan has created the perfect record to confide i. That album, Option Paralysis, is one of true emotion. It’s filled with anger and fear and violence, yet an odd sense of beauty is found underneath it all. Having taken the talent from past albums and expanding it in almost every way, Ben Weinman and his bandmates have created material of near perfection. It’s quite apparent that the band has a major message to portray, and that the translated product is one of the most unique experiences in music today. Farewell, Mona Lisa, the disc’s first single, opens the album with an onslaught reminiscent of 2004’s Sunshine the Werewolf.
