Hitchhiker is a studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Neil Young, issued September 8, 2017 on Reprise Records. It is the ninth release in Young's ongoing archival release series and the first of the Special Release series. Co-produced by Young and David Briggs with post-production from John Hanlon, the album was originally recorded on August 11, 1976 at Indigo Ranch Recording Studio in Malibu, California.

Neil Young first let its existence be known in 2014, when he mentioned a 1976 solo acoustic session recorded with longtime producer David Briggs that was "a complete piece. Most of the songs from that complete piece drifted out in different versions over the years, starting with the appearance of "Campaigner" on 1977's Decade - the only time a song from this session saw the light of day prior to its complete release in 2017 - running through three songs on Rust Never Sleeps and ending in 2010, when "Hitchhiker" showed up on.

This is nothing new for Young; many of his albums were stitched together with earlier songs, including his greatest LP, After the Gold Rush, which contained tracks recorded at a handful of various sessions with different groups. Hitchhiker comes from a particularly fertile period for Young.

Since 2010, Young has released roughly an album per year - with only one consisting of covers. When word trickled out that the long-discussed Hitchhiker was slated for release following 41 years in his vault, fans’ excitement went into overdrive. Old Rusties (aka Young diehards) have clamored for the release of the widely bootlegged album for decades. Along with the previously released Chrome Dreams, which belatedly arrived in 2007 as Chrome Dreams II, Hitchhiker has been one of the most-discussed non-released albums in the Young catalog

Recorded over one night in 1976, Hitchhiker is an acoustic snapshot of Neil Young’s creative process, captured at a time when he was crafting music strong enough to last his whole career. One night in Malibu in the summer of ’76, Neil Young drove a Cadillac convertible to Indigo Ranch Studios and recorded an album called Hitchhiker. Its ten songs were united by sparse arrangements and a tenuous grasp of time. Names like Kennedy, Nixon, Brando, and Pocahontas commingled with mysterious figures from Young’s own imagination. His writing was looser, funnier, and more surreal than the junkie nightmares that comprised his recent records, though he’d retained their hard lessons: detachment and disillusionment as side effects of getting older

Any band Neil Young has been involved in is absolutely legendary, but solo Neil is unearthly. It will be just him, his whiney croon, and acoustic guitar. But this past September, Neil released the album Hitchhicker, which is part of an ongoing archival release series. The tracks on the album have many acoustic renditions of Crazy Horse songs, and given the timing, I'm predicting that "Powderfinger," and "Pocohontas" will find their way to the stage. Other likely Crazy Horse songs according to Setlist. fm data include "My, My, Hey, Hey," and "Mother Earth (Natural Anthem. " "Pocohonatas" Live - Neil Young
