Brilliant IDM from the mid 90s. This album stands out amoungst quite a lot of release's in that it feels more cohesive and melodic not only that the sounds and textures are dark. Northern Dark is not a dance track and is as dark and foreboding as a Siberian winter evening. Robert records as Source which is straight ahead in yer face techno/acid this is a lighter side of his compositional skills meaning every track isnt at 120bpm! A long standing go to in my library but then again most of the early Apollo stuff is because the releases where high quality in aesthtics!

Future sound of London favourite .. Robert Leiners's Aqua Viva = probably one of the best R&S releases in its entire history.. Source was "discovered" by a swedish artist Fredrik B aka Renegade taking renaat some DAT tapes in the 90s.. from sweden.. Aqua Viva is perfection in every way .. made on a vocoder designed by Pelle Jubel / aka founder of Recycle & Propellor-heads.

Definitely the best ambient record ever made. The way Robert layered and mixed those different analogue sounds into beautiful melodies proves he's the best electronic music composer ever(not any sound sounds too loud or too low). The opening sound of the track "Vision of the Past" is just amazing. I melt everytime I listen to it. Try listening to this record with your headphones, you will not believe your ears. A masterpiece! Robert, if you read this give us more of that. I'm waiting so long now for your next ambient album "Visions of the Future" or "Music for Average People".

This era of ambient and downtempo electro produced the best albums because everyone was still using analog gear. Having a studio meant that you needed to be fiercely dedicated to your craft. I still have this album in my collection and it is definitely top 100. I was just saying to my wife of 26 years, how we are sick of most of our music, yet really good ambient seems to stand the test of time better than anything else. My two favourites would be Dreamfish by Pete Namlook and Mixmaster Morris, and the Positiva ambient collection. If you want to hear some new ambient that is inspired by this era check out "ellectrik" on soundcloud. She is an operatic composer who also does electronic.

Sorry, just my opinion, but Lifeforms by FSOL is one of many that I can think of just off the top of my head that are vastly superior...not to mention Fripp, Eno, Krautrock....OK...

"Best ambient record ever made"?I don't know about that. This is a decent album, sure, but I can think of dozens of albums that are far more deserving of that title.

No, did not like this one... It came out in january 94, and maybe was pointing out that the so-called "ambient" music had run it course. Well produced, well polished, but...where's the originality? Listen to it if you're a newcomer and it'll blow your mind. But if you are already deep-rooted into the scene, you'll instantly recognize sounds from other records (Namlook, Reload...) not very cleverly used. Thing a bit annoying is so many people were raving about this record when in my opinion it lacks so much creativity.

Robert Leiner a.k.a. Source Experience made beautiful progressive trance, here in a more ambient kind of John Digweed meets Banco de Gaia treatment: less pulsating and with more ambient soundscapes. Again a completely overlooked album of very high quality.
