His biographical film, Paul Kelly, Stories of Me, directed by Ian Darling, was released to cinemas in October 2012, Kellys Top 40 singles include Billy Baxter, Before Too Long, Darling It Hurts, To Her Door, Dumb Things, and Roll on Summer. Top-20 albums include Gossip, Under the Sun, Comedy, Songs from the South. It was covered by James Reyne on the 2003 tribute album, Stories of Me, A Songwriters Tribute to Paul Kelly and it has also been covered by David Miles, From Nowhere, Semicolon, Ghostwriters, Karl Broadie and Lawrence Agar. In September 2010, Kelly titled his memoirs, How to Make Gravy, on 29 September 2012 Kelly performed How to Make Gravy and Leaps and Bounds at the 2012 AFL Grand Final.
That said, while this tribute album is more consistent than most, some of the performances are standouts, some are merely respectful, and a few fall short. Jim Olsen, president of Signature Sounds, produced this project himself, naturally assembling many of his own artists for this generous 14-song set in celebration of Smither’s 70th birthday. Dave Alvin, a close friend, kicks off the album with a take of the title track that is more relaxed than Smither’s driving version. Mary Gauthier ( I Feel the Same ), Eilen Jewell ( Can’t Shake These Blues ) and Patty Larkin ( Train Home ) dig deep for that bluesy feeling. The clear standouts though are Paul Cebar’s No Love Today with a jazzy, Louis Prima-like arrangement accented by baritone sax, Tim O’Brien’s Origin of Species with Jim Hoke on clarinet, and Peter Mulvey’s Time to Spend.
Several of the artists featured here have covered his material in the past, perhaps most notably Bonnie Raitt whose 1972 version of Love You Like A Man, recast as Love Me Like A Man, became one of her signature songs. It reappears here as an unreleased live recording from October 2012, a fine bluesy delivery featuring just Raitt on vocals and guitar and James Hutchinson on bass.
