This album appears to be a compilation of sound effects previously released on the Audio Fidelity label going back to 1960. Several clues suggest that it was created with less care and interest than those in the original AF run. The vinyl is not as heavy. The technical information is not touted with such pride and detail as in the liner notes of the initial releases. Whereas the original albums claimed a frequency response of 16 Hz to 25 kHz, the same effects appear on this album with a comparatively restricted range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz.I listened to this album shortly after listening to the first in the AF series (Sound Effects Volume 1, DFS 7006) and as a number of the effects are identical, I had the opportunity to directly compare them. Unfortunately the same effects presented herein do not quite match the startling realism as achieved in the original release, particularly in the pinball and adding machine sounds. Instead of the objects sounding live and present in your room, this album sounds a bit more like "a recording". Some subtle component is missing. The transients aren't as crisp. The contribution of those ultra-high frequencies in the original release is simply lacking this time around. I theorize that either these critical frequencies faded from the master tapes while they sat in storage in the years preceding this compilation re-release, or the equipment and processes used to manufacture this album were not of sufficient caliber to transfer those ultra-high frequencies from the master tapes to the extent that the original equipment did. For this reason, I rate the album at 4 stars instead of 5, and I'm sure that Audio Fidelity's creator Sidney Frey (who unfortunately passed away in 1968) would agree with my assessment.
