I am a late convert to choral music and was not awakened to it until one spring afternoon. Having attended wine tasting in central London with a friend, we found ourselves wafting past Westminster Abbey, fairly inebriated. Realising that the Abbey was closed to the casual visitor we chose to stay for Evensong. We were seated in the quire stalls, one of the most beautiful parts of the cathedral. It was one of the most moving musical experience in my life, listening to many voices harmonise so perfectly. It wasn’t about excluding men; it was more about including women, the support aspect.

Deep Throat Choir Be OK (Bella Union). Those with fond memories of Le Mystère Des Voix De Bulgares, a stunning album by the Bulgarian State Radio & Television Female Vocal Choir re-issued, to great acclaim, in 1986 will be fascinated by home-grown Deep Throat Choir. Formed in 2013 by Luisa Gerstein, they are another technically brilliant female collective whose music is based on a combination of lead voice and hummed or chanted backing vocals.

Deep Throat Choir encompass power, creativity and pure enjoyment, women coming together to sing all at once and individually. When deciding a mixtape contributor for International Women’s Day, Deep Throat Choir, a 35-piece all female singing collective became an ideal choice. Deep Throat Choir encompass power, creativity and pure enjoyment, women coming together to sing all at once and individually. Formed by Luisa Gerstein for the love of pure female voices, the project sees the women use intricate melodies to transform the songs of Björk, MK and Little Dragon. What began as a small group of four to five singers grew quickly, sprawling to friends, and friends of friends, taking a life of it’s own.

A wealth of imaginative arrangements make for a genuinely unique debut album.
