MCA signed the band in 1996 following moderate sales of their 1995 debut Cheshire Cat and their growing popularity in Australia. Dude Ranch was the band's final recording released on Cargo and the last to feature their full original lineup, as drummer Scott Raynor was dismissed from the band in 1998.

It was released jointly through MCA Records and independent label Cargo Records, though it was their last with Cargo. The album went platinum in the . Canada, and Australia. In 2007, popular American music magazine Alternative Press listed the album in the article Class of 1997: 10 Albums That Shaped the Punk of Today. Kerrang!, a similar older-brother . magazine to AP, ranked Dude Ranch in The 51 Greatest Pop-Punk Albums Ever.

Recorded at Big Fish Studios in Encinitas, California with producer Mark Trombino, the album was first released on June 17, 1997 in the United States on independent label Cargo Music. The album was released on CD, vinyl, and cassette in 1997 after a special promo CD was released.
