The Lady in Red" is a song by British-Irish singer-songwriter Chris de Burgh. It was released in June 1986 as the second single from the album Into the Light. The song was responsible for introducing de Burgh's music to a mainstream audience worldwide. The song was written in reference to (though not specifically about) his wife Diane and was released on the album Into the Light

Simply Red. Album Home. I've never seen you looking so lovely as you do tonight I've never seen you shine so bright Mmm-mmm-mmm. I've never seen so many men ask you if you wanted to dance Looking for a little romance Given half a chance And I have never seen that dress you're waring Or the highlights in your hair They catch your eyes I have been blinded. Lady in red Is dancing with me (cheek to cheek) Theres nobody here Its just you and me Its where I wanna be And I hardly know this beauty by my side I'll never forget the way you look tonight.

Lady In Red" was a huge worldwide hit, going to in 25 different countries. In the UK, it became a huge part of the cultural landscape, with listeners divided over whether it was the sweetest love song ever written or a pile of treacly musical mush. De Burgh was never able to duplicate the success of this song, but he developed a loyal following in Europe, where there was modest but lasting demand for his music. He explained to, I believe, Matt Lauer, the inspiration for the song. He said he and his wife were drifting and one evening while they were getting ready to go out, he saw her in the red dress and realized he hadn't really looked at her in a long time and it reminded him of when they fell in love. Am I having a false memory of this?
