For the Term of His Natural Life is a 1927 Australian film, based on the novel by Marcus Clarke, directed, produced and co-written by Norman Dawn. It was the most expensive Australian silent film ever made and remains one of the most famous Australian films of the silent era. After a row, Ellinor Devine reveals to her husband Sir Richard that he is not actually the father of their son, also named Richard, but that he was fathered by her cousin, Lord Bellasis.
For the Term of His Natural Life, written by Marcus Clarke, was published in the Australian Journal between 1870 and 1872 (as His Natural Life), appearing as a novel in 1874. It is the best known novelisation of life as a convict in early Australian history. At times relying on seemingly implausible coincidences, the story follows the fortunes of Rufus Dawes, a young man transported for a murder that he did not commit.

Title: For the Term of His Natural Life (1983). Overall a great adaption to TV of the classic novel. Colin Friels does an admirable job of playing the protagonist, Rufas Dawes, and the chemistry between him and Rod Mullinar (Lt. Frere) is excellent. Whilst the plot remains by and large true to the novel, the writers of this made-for-TV version for some reason felt it necessary to give the movie a 'happily ever after' ending, hence the last hour or so of this lengthy movie is drastically different to the story originally told by Marcus Clarke.
It was the most expensive Australian silent film ever made and remains one of the most famous Australian films of the silent era. Contents. In 1850 the district moved to Goulburn, south of Berrima.
The National Film and Sound Archive restored For the Term of His Natural Life in 1981, using two different versions of the film: an incomplete Australian release print, and a shortened US release version (consisting of takes not used by the Australian release) preserved by the American Film Institute. The 1981 version used still photographs and footage from other sources to fill in gaps where the original footage was lost. The tinting is an approximation of the way the original film would have looked, based on the Australian release print.
