He subsequently decided to retain the initial, telling interviewers that it stood for "Quizzical". His most distinguishing feature was his horn-rimmed glasses, to the point that the title card for his second Robert Q. Lewis Show featured a pair of such glasses as a logo, and they were mentioned in the title of his lecture. As a frequent guest panelist on What's My Line?, Lewis's blindfold featured a sketched pair of glasses. Lewis was born as Robert Goldberg in Manhattan on April 25, 1920. His parents were Jewish immigrants.

Lewis also appeared in acting roles through the 50s and 60s, guested on shows hosted by Gale Storm, Patty Duke and others, and was regularly on game shows, as panellist or host, such as Match Game, Cross Wits, Play Your Hunch, What’s My Line?, The Price Is Right, The Show Goes On and The Name’s The Same. Lewis also worked extensively as a radio disc jockey, with Robert Q’s Waxworks being his best-remembered show. His affection for the old songs led Lewis to make some records, almost always of popular songs of bygone days.
