Lotta Sea Lice is a collaborative studio album between Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile, released on October 13, 2017, on Matador, Marathon Artists and Milk! Records. Barnett and Vile announced that they had jammed together and decided to go on a mutual tour on June 7, 2017. They announced the release date and lead single "Over Everything" on August 30.
Lotta Sea Lice was conceived by Courtney and Kurt during their meetings along the festival circuit. The album includes four cover songs; Courtney covering Kurt’s Peepin' Tomboy, Kurt covering Courtney’s Out Of The Woodwork, both covering Courtney’s wife Jen’s Fear Is Like A Forest and Belly’s Untogether from their 1993 album Star
My thoughts on Kurt Vile have changed over the years, and here with Courtney Barnett, I suddenly came face to face with what’s been eluding me for so long. There was a time when I considered Kurt Vile to be part of the laid-back neo-psychedelic movement, primarily from his work with Adam Granduciel of War On Drugs, but now it’s clear that Kurt Vile has developed a genre all his own, or perhaps an extension of several, because what the two of these casually thoughtful artists have given us.
Instead, Lotta Sea Lice, Barnett and Vile’s first collaborative album together, makes for a remarkably sublime pairing that brings out the best in each artist, an unexpected gem that sits near the top of either’s discography. The way Barnett and Vile lock into grooves, trading barbs and asides in deadpan tones, and dueling with seemingly effortless yet entrancing guitar riffs makes for a delightful endeavor that plays to both artists’ strengths. Written and recorded in a couple week-long spurts over a two-year span in Melbourne, the album’s origin is one of mutual fans finding common ground
All of these elements are in play on Lotta Sea Lice, a rambling nine-song affair that finds the duo singing each other's songs, playing tunes penned by friends, and covering Belly's "Untogether," an underappreciated '90s cult classic that the band once played as a duet with Radiohead's Thom Yorke. Barnett and Vile do not bring to mind Yorke and Tanya Donelly, nor do they sound a thing like the original Kurt and Courtney of Nirvana and Hole fame.
The collaborative LP from Kurt Vile and Courtney Barnett feels like an overheard discussion between two existential misfits. They sing songs about writing songs, covering each other in the process. Their debut collaboration, Lotta Sea Lice, thus feels less like a collection of traditional duets than an overheard discussion between two misfits who just met at an Existentialists Anonymous meeting. Unlike most he-said/she-said pairings, there’s no romantic role-play here, no cheeky entendres, no faux-frisson milked for dramatic tension, no song that’s ever going to replace Islands in the Stream or Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around on hipster karaoke-bar playlists.
