Formerly of the moniker Fleeing New York, Band of Skulls’s earliest musical excursions came from playing gigs at night clubs in the London area. The band changed their name in November 2008 and began recording demos in Hayward’s father’s studio/shed. These demos generated some online buzz and led to the band’s debut album Baby Darling Doll Face Honey distributed by Shangri-La Music. On March 31, 2014 Band of Skulls released their third full-length album Himalayan which peaked at No. 21 in the UK, No. 24 in Australia, and features the singles Asleep At the Wheel and Nightmares.

Band of Skulls are an English alternative rock band from Southampton, consisting of frontman Russell Marsden, bassist Emma Richardson, and drummer Matt Hayward. Formed in 2004, under the name Fleeing New York, they released their debut album 'Baby Darling Doll Face Honey' in 2009, which was dwarfed by their sophomore record, 'Sweet Sour', which reached in the UK Albums chart in 2012. They released their third album 'Himalayan' in 2014 and their latest release, ‘By Default’, in May 2016
Beginning with their 1968 debut album they broke tradition by using classical music instruments in rock songs and rock instruments in classical pieces. This fusion, daring at the time, impressed legendary conductor Leonard Bernstein so much that he invited the group to appear at one of his Young People's Concerts with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra where they performed their signature song "Brandenburg", based on the first movement of Bach's Fifth Brandenburg Concerto.

That Band of Skulls was going to have to change was inevitable once drummer Matt Hayward told RIchardson and singer/guitarist Russell Marsden he was leaving the group at the end of 2016, once they had finished touring their fourth album, By Default. We became a songwriting duo, Marsden says, which has a completely different feel to being a songwriting band.
When the New York Dolls released their debut album in 1973, they managed to be named both "Best New Band" and "Worst Band" in Creem Magazine's annual reader's poll, and it usually takes something special to polarize an audience like that
