Everybody knows "Wooly Bully," their signature hit. Their other big hit was "Li'l Red Riding Hood. The songs on their first two (and only) records follow the blueprint of one or the other. On the one hand, there are tough rockers like "Sweet Talk," "The Memphis Beat," the rollicking stomper "Haunted House," "Hanky Panky," and the "Wooly Bully" clone "Sorry 'Bout That" - all perfect for toga parties, keggers, and good old-fashioned blowouts.

Following "Wooly Bully," the group recorded a series of largely novelty singles, but only "Li'l Red Riding Hood" approached the success of its predecessor. Frustrated at being perceived as a talentless novelty act, Samudio broke up the Pharaohs in 1967 and recorded as the Sam the Sham Revue, and adopted the name Sam Domingo in 1970. His lone solo LP, Sam, Hard & Heavy, featured slide guitarist Duane Allman, but failed to establish him as a major talent. Apart from that head scratcher, this is a great re-release by a band that is too often written off as a mere one-hit wonder (as if having one hit is a bad thing; think of how many bands never even pull that off).

Also known as "Lil' Red Riding Hood," is an updated version of the Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale, with the lead singer portraying the wolf. In this context, the singer is preying on the girl through lies and deception in an attempt to win her favor and take advantage of her. It's a scene played out in many social situations, as an aggressive guy might play lots of tricks to seduce an unsuspecting girl. Written by Ronald Blackwell and produced by Stan Kesler, this was the second big semi-novelty hit for the Texas band Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs. The Big Bopper released a different song called "Little Red Riding Hood" in 1958. In 2011 the actress Amanda Seyfried recorded a new version of this song. Seyfried starred in the movie Little Red Riding Hood, which was a Twilight-style update on the fairy tale. Her version was produced by Matt Sorum, formerly of Guns 'N' Roses.

Little Red Riding Hood I don't think little big girls should Go walking in these spooky old woods alone. Owoooooooo! What big eyes you have, The kind of eyes that drive wolves mad. So just to see that you don't get chased I think I ought to walk with you for a ways. What full lips you have. Owoooooooo! What a big heart I have-the better to love you with. Little Red Riding Hood Even bad wolves can be good. I'll try to be satisfied just to walk close by your side. Maybe you'll see things my way before we get to grandma's place. Little Red Riding Hood You sure are looking good You're everything that a big bad wolf could want. Owoooooooo! I mean baaaaaa!

This disc conveniently contains the first two albums by Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs, all you need (and practically all there is) from these zany Texas rockers. Domingo "Sam" Samudio and his merry men scored a smash in 1965 with the garage-rock classic "Wooly Bully," from the debut album of the same name.
