It's the first time in his solo career that Adams has tread the same trail for two albums in a row, which only confirms the suspicion that now that Adams is sober, he's getting down to the business of being the troubadour he's always aspired to be, assisted by a band so sympathetic to his style that he's named. his album after them.

But Cardinology is the first time Adams has actually stepped aside from the forefront. On this release, the band is moreover cohesive and Adam’s role is no greater than any other of his Cardinals bandmates. No longer are these albums sporting a band that’s glorified support for Adams. It’s on this album where the Cardinals can be heard as a band, one band. Longtime diehards might find the the concept of Cardinals featuring Ryan Adams difficult to stomach. What’s more, the album’s 45 minute run time and abundance of two-plus minute tracks might not sit well with those used to the more drawn out figure pieces found on some of his earlier solo work. But at the same time, Cardinology reflects a writer who has found music as brilliant as his words, a musician who has finally found that right band, and a man who has finally found a sense of happiness and purpose.
Clean, sober and subdued, Adams is clearly behaving himself. However, the smattering of pearls, notably 'Let Us Down Easy' and 'Crossed Out Name', can't disguise the general absence of sparkle.
Of his Cardinals output the only album to have any stellar stand-outs was Cold Roses, and the band, as it existed on that record, practically imploded upon impact. A good album naturally has songs that serve as stand-outs and some that serve as continuations of the album, or ‘filler,’ or whatever you want to call them. Cardinology manages to find Adams pulling together the strengths of his cumulative work and creating a few stand-outs in the process. Easy Tiger was an extremely homogeneous, but solid effort. It was also his best since Cold Roses. Looking at the tracklist I can understand the want for a standout track, but every track on that album, save maybe Halloweenhead (goofy, cheezy a la Magick on this effort) is consistently good. With Cardinology, there is without a doubt some more diverse tracks, but with that come some of the duds that I think Easy Tiger didn’t have.
People have been feeling disappointed by Ryan Adams for almost as long as they've been liking him. When his band Whiskeytown leaped to the fore of the then-burgeoning alt-country movement with its classic 1995 debut, Faithless Street, Adams seemed like nothing less than a savior, a recklessly prodigal kid equally informed by punk rock and archetypal C&W. However, it soon seemed Adams' legendary petulance wasn't some enfant terrible act, but the manifestation of a self-absorbed
