These techniques were popular at the time in what some have called a "hot" jazz style, with James's idol Louis Armstrong providing an example of one who used these techniques, but they later fell out of favor in the 1950s with the advent of "cool" jazz. [Liner]Harry James, the most successful trumpeter of this decade, has reached a new peak in American band entertainment. In a sense, James illustrates a reversal of the usual "boy makes good" story. Harry was considered a name to reckon with in the band world long before he had his own organization. While working with Benny Goodman, his name became a by-word with every music follower. Later, when he organized his own orchestra, he went on cross-country tours, building his band and his arrangements–while presenting them to a public that had already acclaimed him.Harry was born in Albany, Georgia, while his parents were travelling with the Mighty Haag Circus. A musician himself, Harry's father taught the boy to play the drums, and when he was six, Harry was exciting circus crowds with 'Down Home Rag' as a member of the band. The family then moved along to the Christy Brothers Circus, where Mr. James conducted the band. By the time he was ten, he was playing solos, and two years later he was given the job of conducting the circus' Number Two Band. When Harry was fifteen, the family retired to Beaumont, Texas. He kept up his music studies, and won the State Music Contest. But at the same time he began sitting in with orchestras around the Southwest, and became well known as an instrumentalist of extraordinary imagination and technical ability. He joined Ben Pollack's orchestra and promptly came up with a song called 'Peckin' that started a dance craze. News of Harry's unusual talents reached Benny Goodman, who induced Harry to join an orchestra including Gene Krupa, among others. The group became famous for its brilliant arrangements, driving rhythms and breath-taking technique. In 1939, Harry formed his own orchestra and electrified dancers throughout the country with a series of compositions and arrangements that had them clamoring for more. Many of those numbers are included in this collection: 'Ciribiribin,' the famous theme song that has identified Harry on the air and at all his personal appearances; 'Sleepy Lagoon,' the lovely, languorous melody that became an instant hit when Harry recorded it, and 'The Flight of the Bumble Bee' and 'Concerto for Trumpet,' two brilliant exhibition pieces for the sensational James technique. There are other famous James arrangements in this collection, each of them a model of concise arrangement and fine performance. These are eight of Harry's greatest numbers, everybody's all-time favorites.

This LP has been reissued in 1973 on the traditional multi-coloured CBS (USA) label, SBP-234578. Underneath this sequential catalogue number is another: JCL-655. It's possible that there exist(ed) two versions of this LP, apart from the original 1955 version: one on CBS, the other simultaneously reissued on Columbia with the JCL prefix. The front of the sleeve is a reproduction of the 1955 original. The sound on the reissue seems to retain the quality of the original recordings from the 1930's up until 1951 ("Don't Be That Way", B-3). Over all, a great LP to listen to, and remember the jazz era as it is interpreted by Harry James.
