Seasons, Masks And Keys functions as a retrospective of pianist and composer Pat Matshikiza's career. It is a long-overdue attempt to bring more recognition to this highly influential, yet underrecorded figure in South African jazz. Although nobody questions his status as one of the genre's great figures, given his 1975 landmark recording Tshona!, Matshikiza recordings are rare and difficult to come by. This album, perhaps, is the first step to fixing this problem. The recording consists of pieces Matshikiza has written over the past fifty years, plus two covers. As his 1971 recording demonstrates, Matshikiza's piano playing has a gospel-powered forcefulness, which is absent at points in this album. Nevertheless, by track eight, all problems are solved.
Born into a musical family in 1938, Matshikiza’s pianist father Meekly Matshikiza laid the foundation for a young Pat who, at the age of seven, took up playing the organ in church. His talent for composing could be attributed to his lineage – his paternal uncle Todd Matshikiza who composed Hamba Kahle and the landmark South African musical King Kong. Pursuing his organ skills, a young Matshikiza played the instrument at St Matthews, a missionary school in Keiskammahoek, Eastern Cape, where he had gone to study towards a teaching diploma after matriculating. Hell man, that was a big band, Matshikiza says in the liner notes of his 2005 album Seasons, Masks and Keys. There was Mackay Davashe on tenor sax, Kippie Moeketsi on alto sax, Makhaya Ntshoko on drums, Saint Mokoangoe on bass, Dennis Mpale on trumpet, Blyth Mbitjana on trombone, Pat Matshikiza on piano.

Pat vuyisile matshikiza – (2. 1. 2014) rip. Sad to open 2015 with the news that another obscure SAfrican musician friend and legendary jazz pianist has departed into the great unknown, and, unheard of within the confines of our shallow commercial music media mainstream. Pat was an iconic, hidden living treasure. One of South Africa’s jazz greats he was part of a music family dynasty: son of pianist Meekly Matshikiza, nephew to Uncle Todd ‘King Kong’ Matshikiza and cousin to the late John Matshikiza (author & Journalist)from Queenstown, Eastern Cape.
