On Messy Century, their full-length debut for Mute, Liverpool-based Mountaineers seem to fall asleep at the wheel while listening to English folk music. Now debut album Messy Century develops the theme. Mountaineers are frontman and vocalist Alex Germains, electronic music graduate Ceri James and Czech-born drummer Tomas Kelar. Sewing" employs a smart cut-up acoustic guitar stutter before launching into vocoded Adam Duritz melodrama.

The Mountaineers: Messy Century. September 27 2003, 1:00am, The Times. From the opening line of the first track - It’s like a kiss inside a parked romantic vehicle - this debut album from the Liverpool-based trio the Mountaineers delivers exactly what is promised: an endearingly jittery, kaleidoscopic, and melodically assured portrait of us twentysomethings.
