Thus, Chance became James White (as a nod to James Brown), the Contortions became the Blacks, and his music, previously a. twisted, experimental brand of avant-jazz, became a disco/funk/free jazz hybrid. As bizarre as the fusion of Albert Ayler and Giorgio Moroder might sound, Off White works primarily because Chance commits to both sides of the music.

One of the many projects to which Robert Quine lent his guitar skills after the dissolution of the Voidoids. 1+2 and Off Black, it's Jody Harris on the rest of the album. Although James White's alto sax dominates the sound, the plethora of instruments includes guitar, slide guitar, bass, piano, tenor sax, congas, organ and violin. The often atonal but always cohesive music is most funky and original, reminding one of Captain Beefheat or Sun Ra at their weirdest. This re-issue includes bonus tracks, which make an already recognized masterpiece into a definitive must-have. I saw the contortions play live in 1976. Extended and alternate versions of the original vinyl are all inlcuded here which makes this record a must.
