Each volume in EMI Germany's extensive Best of 1980-1990 series features at least two discs worth of hits, providing a very broad, nondiscriminating representation of the period. Though these sets obviously deal with songs that were popular in Europe, they translate well to American music fans, since the majority of the selections were hits in both territories. Those who were into chart pop during the time will find that the series comes in handy, especially since it can plug a lot of gaps in a collection.

X – Los Angeles (1980) X’s debut Los Angeles set the template for The John Doe and Exene Cervenka Show, the great punk soap opera of the 1980s. Falling in and out of love and hate over every album, they gave us every detail of every booze-fueled breakdown, and always left room for bitchy asides about the rest of the poseurs and degenerates trying to make the scene in the shadow of Hollywood. Billy Zoom’s maximum surf and rockabilly riffs always helped made sure the desperation never felt like a drag.
Best-of lists such as this one are by nature subjective. But rock in the Eighties was like that - lively, varied, contentious and, to some degree, inconclusive. Rather than performing the song himself, however, he considered using artists from various genres to sing one verse each, hoping to break down musical separatism in the United States as well as apartheid in South Africa. The idea took on a life of its own, and more than fifty musicians eventually wound up contributing their talents, including Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Gil Scott-Heron, Grandmaster Melle Mel, Bonnie Raitt, Lou Reed, David Ruffin, Run-D. Ringo Starr, Pete Townshend and Bobby Womack. Ian Curtis, the Manchester group's singer and songwriter, had hanged himself in May 1980.
Welcome to our list of the 200 best songs of the 1980s. A great deal of today's music looks to the '80s for inspiration, but there are so many different ideas of what "'80s" as a descriptor can mean. Here we return to the source material. The components had already appeared on his 1976 album Estudando O Samba, but the recycled tune–rendered here with a serrated, quasi-metal guitar line–shows Zé’s deep yen to perfect his most madcap compositions, which other artists, were they bright enough to write them, would likely shelve in a moment of unwelcome sanity.
