QUO VADIS – Miklós Rózsa. Movie music UK classics. We conclude with the album’s highlight and in your author’s judgment, a masterpiece that earns Rózsa immortality. The ‘Quo Vadis Concert Suite was created by Rózsa himself and is arranged in classical form as a concert piece of four movements. We open with the bravado Ave Caesar, a marcia trionfonti, which features Marcus’ Theme in astounding interplay with the Quo Vadis Domine Theme. Romanza is the heart of the suite, rendered in ABA form, and achingly romantic. We open with Lygia’s Theme, which segues at 2:35 atop French horns nobile into Petronius’ Theme. Track Listing: DISC ONE.

For the score of Quo Vadis Miklós Rózsa composed the music in this country and then went to England where he selected the best musicians from the finest English orchestras to record the music in this album. He chose the chorus of voices heard on these records and directed the entire musical score for the picture. The orchestra of 75 and a chorus of 100 were recorded in England, while the filming of Quo Vadis was done in Italy, and later the entire production was assembled in Hollywood. Lyrics for the soloists and chorus were written by Hugh Gray. April 18, 27 and May 3, 1950 (. pre-recordings); April 1951 (score) at Elstree Way Studios (M-G-M Stage 7), Borehamwood, England; August 15, 16 and 23, 1951 (. score revisions) at M-G-M Studios scoring stage, Culver City, California.
