Two singles were released from the album: "Turn Off the Lights", which reached US Pop and on the R&B charts, and "Come Go With Me," which reached R&B.
In 2006, Pendergrass announced his retirement from the music business. In 2007, he briefly returned to performing to participate in Teddy 25: A Celebration of Life, Hope & Possibilities, a 25th anniversary awards ceremony that marked Pendergrass' accident date, but also raised money for his charity, The Teddy Pendergrass Alliance. Theodore "Teddy" DeReese Pendergrass, Sr. (born March 26, 1950 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, died January 13, 2010) was an American Grammy nominated R&B soul singer-songwriter. Pendergrass' career began when he was a drummer for The Cadillacs, who soon merged with fellow soul band Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. After a stellar early 70s run including the Grammy-nominated hit If You Don't Know Me by Now, Teddy went solo in 1976.
Teddy Pendergrass was an indisputable soul legend when he made his Elektra/Asylum debut in 1984. The former Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes lead vocalist and chart-topping solo superstar’s career had been stalled by a 1982 car accident, in which he suffered permanent paralysis from the waist down. The album – which included the top 10 AC hit single, Hold Me, with vocals from a young Whitney Houston – was later featured prominently as the evocative soundtrack to Alan Rudolph’s 1984 film, Choose Me. JOY, released in 1988, reached on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart – his highest placing since TEDDY in 1979 – with two top 3 R&B hits in 2 . and the stirring title track. Joy proved a smash, Teddy’s first solo chart-topper in a decade. Teddy Pendergrass retired from the music business in 2006. Sadly, he passed away three years later following surgery for colon cancer.
