Henk Guittart (born 1953) studied Viola with Jürgen Kussmaul and Orchestral Conducting with Louis Stotijn in The Hague (Netherlands). In 1974 he founded the Schoenberg Ensemble, of which he was the violist and artistic director until 1991. He was the violist of the Schoenberg Quartet for 33 years, from its foundation in 1976 until the end of its existence in 2009. From 1991 to 2001 Guittart performed with oboist Han de Vries and pianist Ivo Janssen. They recorded original works for this unique combination by Klughardt, Hindemith, Loeffler and Kahn on CD. As a chamber musician and solo violist, he has performed and recorded with The Netherlands Wind Ensemble, Deutsche Bachsolisten, Consortium Classicum, Stuttgart Piano Trio and St. Altogether, he has made over 60 recordings as a violist.

In the capable hands of Han de Vries, it proves to be an expressively plangent soloist. In Part 1, Hindemith begins with the piano solo, adds the heckelphone for the Arioso, completing the ensemble with the viola in the Duett. Loeffler’s Two Rhapsodies after poems by Maurice Rollinat are rather more convincing. The poem behind the first one is called ‘The Pond’, and Loeffler treats it very simply and expressively. The second, ‘The Pipes’, is more agitated and complex, using the plaintive tones of oboe and viola effectively. I sometimes wished, though, for more assertive viola playing from Guittart, and de Vries sounds a little tense and tentative in his softer passages. The result is that the music is well played but a little under-characterised in places, especially as some of it is in need of considerable advocacy.
